Is The Jockey Relevant
Our inputs directly affect our outputs.
Inputs → Thoughts → Outputs (decisions)
My job as a steward is to make excellent decisions. So I need excellent inputs.
I need a clear head. I need my heart to be in the right place. I need to have the right perspective.
This is why I took so much thought to put up the first poster in my office.
What you should notice is there is no jockey on the horse.
Body Express in 2019 was running in one of the most iconic races, the Preakness. The horse finished the race and even did an extra lap without the leader.
We need to be humbled and realize leadership doesn’t always require us to be the jockey.
I need to constantly be reminded and reduce my ego. Oftentimes our job is to get out of the way.
This picture is to remind me.
It’s not about me.
Yes, there are times for direct leadership. But sometimes the best leadership is to be quiet. Shut up. Get out of the way. Be ready to give a high five at the finish line for the day.
How can you let go this week to show someone you trust them?
My grandfather told me many years ago: “Let people surprise you. You won’t be disappointed.”
Onward,
Matt
